Reflection on the death of Margaret Thatcher

There is only one story in the media – the death of Margaret Thatcher. A woman who divided a nation as the Daily Mirror’s front page says today and I couldn’t agree more. The name inspires reaction of some sort across the political and social spectrum and we should all be so lucky to be remembered at all.

Don’t get me wrong I’m no apologist but I feel that people of my generation should not conform to opinions put forth by others as we were too young to even remember Mrs Thatcher when she was in power. Dislike her politics, policies and her political legacy if you want but the majority of our lives has be shaped by other politicians and it is not a competition about whose lives were affected more by the Tory policies of the 1980s – we were all affected and so were our families and communities – that is the nature of politics and governments.

Mrs Thatcher divided opinion when she was alive and will continue to do so in death but to provoke any reaction at all shows she took decisions – for better or worse – rather than just being a passive career politician like so much of the establishment.

‘You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something in your life’  Sir Winston Churchill
