Gulag: A History by Anne Applebaum

Anne Applebaum’s seminal work on the history the Russian gulag system is the most complete compliation of evidence and accounts of this dark chapter in Russia’s history. By piecing together eye witness testimonies, novels, memoirs and the available achieve evidence Applebaum has create a fluid, understandable account which draws the reader in and presents the most comprehensive picture to date on the roots, progression and evolution of the gulag.

The author opening admits where her account lack firm evidence or corroberation and in this genre it is refreshingly honest but also leaves the reader in no doubt about the secretive elements which still exist in Russia since the drawing back of the iron curtain over 20 years ago.
